A local version of the popular Pop Idol, called Singapore Idol, will air on MediaCorp's Channel 5 in the later half of the year.
Singapore is the only Asian country to have acquired rights to the Idol format which is jointly owned by British television production companies FremantleMedia and 19TV.
MediaCorp would not disclose how much they paid for the format rights, but Ms Selena Ho, vice-president of Network Programming and Promotions 5, MediaCorp TV, says it is 'comparable to what we paid for other established formats' such as Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and The Weakest Link.
She hopes that thousands will take part in auditions for Idol, the dates of which have not been fixed yet.
will singapore (ever) find another rueben or clay or kelly clarkson?
